Sustainability at Fat Squirrel Outdoor

Our commitment to sustainability

At Fat Squirrel Outdoor, we believe in protecting the natural world while delivering memorable outdoor experiences. Whether you're enjoying our events in a woodland setting or another rural setting, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. This is how we minimize our environmental impact across all our venues.

Respect for our natural environment

We aim to minimise our impact on all our locations, and endeavour to leave no trace to protect local wildlife. Therefore, we respectfully ask that you don’t bring your own food or party decorations to help us reduce litter and protect the wildlife. We follow strict practices for waste management, keeping plastic waste to a minimum and recycling whatever we can.

Shopping locally and sustainably and where possible second hand

Thanks to Harry the horse, we are able to maintain a local source of sustainable fire wood.

Harry is able to pull out fallen trees with minimal impact on the rest of the woods. In many instances the wood we used is sourced from the private estates we use.

Sustainable wood

Thanks to Harry the horse we are able to source wood for the campfires sustainably. Harry is able to pull out fallen trees, often on the private estates we use for our activities.

Reusable over disposable

To minimize waste and our need for recycling, we use reusable mess tins and cutlery for all our meals, avoid single-use plastics and paper disposables as much as possible. We use bamboo stirrers and recycled paper napkins. We also limit how many paper towels and napkins we put out to encourage guests to use sparingly. This practice helps us significantly reduce the waste generated at our events and encourages guests to make eco-conscious choices.

Reducing food waste

We prioritise locally sourced, sustainable foods, choosing to source our meat from local butchers. We offer vegan alternatives to cater to plant-based diets. When buying items like coffee and biscuits we buy in bulk to keep our transport emissions low.

By order food only when we have bookings keeps our food waste to a minimum and we compost any waste food that can’t be stored. We partner with local cake suppliers for our party cakes to support the local community and reduce unnecessary transport emissions.

Solar-powered outdoor lighting

For our evening events we are committed to using solar-powered lighting reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and embracing renewable energy. Our locations are off-grid, and we endeavour to keep our energy usage low.

Reducing our carbon miles

To reduce our carbon miles the team carshare wherever possible, for our own events and when attending training. We also have a green transport policy for our guests.

We encourage our visitors to carpool, use public transport, or choose eco-friendly travel options to reduce their carbon footprint.
