Fire and Feast camp is an engaging outdoor experience day for young people that includes bushcraft, crafting and outdoor cooking. This is a full day of outdoor adventure.
Cooking on campfires is a great way to help young people understand healthy eating and reduce food anxiety. Cooking from scratch, with raw ingredients, in an unusual outdoor environment helps young people try foods and ingredients they may otherwise refuse. By including an element of choice, we find that no one goes hungry, and we cater for most food allergies and intolerances.
Bushcraft and crafting activities increase manual dexterity while nurturing a positive attitude towards trial and error that build confidence and resilience in their own abilities.
Fire and feast is perfect for schools, youth groups, Scouts and Guides
Discounts available for these groups of young people
Fire and Feast is designed for young people aged 8-14. For SEND young people this age bracket is a guide.
This camp is intended as a drop-off camp, if this would your young person couldn't attend please contact us.
You only need to bring a water bottle
Sensory toys
In the summer - protect from sun, stings and bites
It's best to keep legs covered even in hot weather to help prevent nettle stings and insect bites. Bring a sun hat.
In the winter - wrap up warm
It is always better to take layers off than it is to be cold. In the winter we suggest leggings under trousers and two pairs of socks and at least three top layers. Don't forget gloves and hats.
Waterproof jacket
Always a good idea - this is the UK after all!
Sturdy trainers, shoes or boots
Sturdy boots or wellies are strongly recommended. NO SANDALS
Please leave these items at home
We provide breakfast, lunch and fruit as snacks.
The idea of Fire and Feast camp is to introduce healthy eating and practical cooking skills. We use raw ingredients where possible and encourage the young people to get involved in the preparation and cooking which increases their interest in trying new foods.
We cater for all food allergies. Please make sure you complete the consent form that will be sent by email when you book.
If your young person has very specific food requirements please contact us hello@fatsquirreloutdoor.co.uk
Rain
Our camp areas all have some shelter. We do not cancel or close for rain unless there has been an amber or red warning for severe weather.
Our shelters are waterproof and the cover is fire retardant so it is OK for fires to be inside the shelters on wet evenings, you can sit under cover.
Windy
It isn't safe to be under trees in high winds and we may need to cancel events when the wind is strong (above 40mph). If we need to cancel an event you will be offered an alternative date, we do not offer refunds, please check full terms and conditions before booking.
Snow
For light snow it is likely that events will go ahead - please dress appropriately for being outdoors in the snow. If we need to cancel due to heavy snow you will be offered an alternative date.
Toilets
We will have either a camping toilet in a zip door tent and hand washing facilities. We cannot
provide personal care in our woodland.
No footpaths
We are trying to keep the wood as natural as possible to retain its charm. The ground is relatively flat but it is uneven and there are some trunks from felled trees to watch out for.
Shelters without electricity
All of our accommodation is canvas - we do not have a building and there are no phone charging facilities. We do not have mains electricity or gas - so some things take a little longer
First aid
Fat Squirrel Outdoor staff are first aiders and we have first aid facilities
If we need to stop an event happening due to high winds, heavy snow or a change in Covid restrictions we will first alternative dates. If you can't make any of the alternative dates offered we will grant a refund minus an administration fee of 20%.
