Fire and feast

Bushcraft and campfire cooking adventures

Unplug, learn new skills and make new friends in a relaxed outdoor environment

Fire and Feast is the perfect day outdoors for young people aged 8 to 14. Guests cook up their own hot breakfast and lunch over the campfire - with bushcraft, axe throwing and time to play or hang out in hammocks.

Special Educational Needs and Disabled welcome (SEND)

The Fat Squirrel Outdoor team is inclusivity trained and has experience working with SEND young people - with or without a formal diagnosis. Please email us if you would like to know whether our experience is suitable for your young person.

Fire and Feast Holiday Camp

Hosted in the school holidays, these camps run from 9:30am to 2:30pm. Some sessions are HAF camps, offering funded places for eligible children in Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire. Some places for SEND young people supported by Active Impact. See below to book camps coming up.

Fire and Feast Saturday Lunch Club

Intended to help anxious young people these shorter sessions include fire lighting and cooking together to make new friends. Everyone aged 8-14 is welcome, including those with SEND, who may find these shorter sessions easier to manage.

Fire and Feast for Youth Groups

If you run a youth group or charity we can host a Fire and Feast session especially for your young people at any of our locations. Please get in touch.

Host for your youth group

Fire and Feast camp is an engaging outdoor experience day for young people that includes bushcraft, crafting and outdoor cooking. This is a full day of outdoor adventure.

Cooking on campfires is a great way to help young people understand healthy eating and reduce food anxiety. Cooking from scratch, with raw ingredients, in an unusual outdoor environment helps young people try foods and ingredients they may otherwise refuse. By including an element of choice, we find that no one goes hungry, and we cater for most food allergies and intolerances.

Bushcraft and crafting activities increase manual dexterity while nurturing a positive attitude towards trial and error that build confidence and resilience in their own abilities.

A Fat Squirrel Outdoor woodland shelter

Who can attend

Fire and Feast is designed for young people aged 8-14. For SEND young people this age bracket is a guide.

This camp is intended as a drop-off camp, if this would your young person couldn't attend please contact us.

What to bring

You only need to bring a water bottle

  • Please do not bring your own food unless you have discussed with us first
  • Energy and sugary canned drinks will be confiscated

Sensory toys

What should we wear?

In the summer - protect from sun, stings and bites

It's best to keep legs covered even in hot weather to help prevent nettle stings and insect bites. Bring a sun hat.

In the winter - wrap up warm

It is always better to take layers off than it is to be cold. In the winter we suggest leggings under trousers and two pairs of socks and at least three top layers. Don't forget gloves and hats.

Waterproof jacket

Always a good idea - this is the UK after all!

Sturdy trainers, shoes or boots

Sturdy boots or wellies are strongly recommended. NO SANDALS

What to leave at home

Please leave these items at home

  • electronic devices
  • packed lunches and snacks (see out food provision below)

The food provided

We provide breakfast, lunch and fruit as snacks.

The idea of Fire and Feast camp is to introduce healthy eating and practical cooking skills. We use raw ingredients where possible and encourage the young people to get involved in the preparation and cooking which increases their interest in trying new foods.

We cater for all food allergies. Please make sure you complete the consent form that will be sent by email when you book.

If your young person has very specific food requirements please contact us hello@fatsquirreloutdoor.co.uk

What happens if the weather is bad?

Rain

Our camp areas all have some shelter. We do not cancel or close for rain unless there has been an amber or red warning for severe weather.

Our shelters are waterproof and the cover is fire retardant so it is OK for fires to be inside the shelters on wet evenings, you can sit under cover.

Windy

It isn't safe to be under trees in high winds and we may need to cancel events when the wind is strong (above 40mph). If we need to cancel an event you will be offered an alternative date, we do not offer refunds, please check full terms and conditions before booking.

Snow

For light snow it is likely that events will go ahead - please dress appropriately for being outdoors in the snow. If we need to cancel due to heavy snow you will be offered an alternative date.

Do you have toilets

Toilets

We will have either a camping toilet in a zip door tent and hand washing facilities. We cannot

provide personal care in our woodland.

What is it like in the woods?

No footpaths

We are trying to keep the wood as natural as possible to retain its charm. The ground is relatively flat but it is uneven and there are some trunks from felled trees to watch out for.

Shelters without electricity

All of our accommodation is canvas - we do not have a building and there are no phone charging facilities. We do not have mains electricity or gas - so some things take a little longer

First aid

Fat Squirrel Outdoor staff are first aiders and we have first aid facilities

Can I get a refund?

If we need to stop an event happening due to high winds, heavy snow or a change in Covid restrictions we will first alternative dates. If you can't make any of the alternative dates offered we will grant a refund minus an administration fee of 20%.

If you need to cancel up to 48 hours before your event, we will refund the fee you paid minus a 20% administration charge. We cannot accept cancellations within 48 hours of your booking.  Please check our full terms and conditions before booking.

Can do I complain?

If you are satisfied with the camp experience please do talk to us about it so that we can improve.

Please email any complaints to hello@fatsquirreloutdoor.co.uk, written complaints will be acknowledged within 7 days.
