Frequently asked questions

What should we bring with us to a Campfire event?

A cushion

We have new rustic benches you might like to bring a cushion or outdoor seat pad for extra comfort.

A blanket

You might also like to snuggle under a blanket around a campfire.

Torch

A torch is a good idea, particularly if your children want to play in the dark.

Please do not bring your own food and drink

What should we wear?

Wrap up warm

It is always better to take layers off than it is to be cold. In the winter we suggest leggings under trousers and two pairs of socks and at least three top layers. Don't forget gloves and hats.

Waterproof jacket

Always a good idea - this is the UK after all!

Sturdy trainers, shoes or boots

The woodland is relatively flat but the ground is uneven and there are felled tree stumps. Sturdy boots or wellies are strongly recommended.

Long trousers

Keeping legs covered all year round protects from scratches, bites and stings.

Can I bring my dog?

Well behaved and friendly dogs are welcome, but note that there are resident deer and other animals in the woodland so they must remain on a lead at all times. Please pick up after your dog too.

How many people can I bring?

Our campfire shelters comfortably host 6 to 8 adults seated. Our whole venue can host 120 people.

How is food served?

We attempt to keep waste to a minimum and serve our food in mess tins and use stainless steel mugs were we can. Please note that we are an 'off-grid' location, so all gas, water and power has to be generated, that does mean that sometimes things go a little slower than you might expect.

Is there a bar?

We do have a bar selling a small range of beers, cider, wine and soft drinks. However we can only sell alcohol when there are no activities taking place. You can also purchase some additional snacks and 'magic fire'  that changes the colour of your campfire flames.

What can the kids do?

Play in the woods

We have a giant swing, there are lots of giant sticks for building dens. Please note that any dens already standing are built by children, so they are not particularly sturdy.

Please avoid activity areas

Please keep your children away from our rifle shooting area (behind the canvas walls) and encourage them to keep distant from other guests under covid restrictions.

Fire safety

Please make sure that your children behave safely around the fires, we are happy to give fire safety talks. Fires must be kept in the pits and we ask that people don't move burning sticks around. If we see dangerous behaviour we will ask that it stops and we reserve the right to ask people who don't keep their children or everyone else in the woodland safe to leave.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Rain

The camp area is fairly sheltered so we do not cancel or close for rain unless there has been a severe weather warning. Your shelter will be waterproof and the cover is fire retardant so it is OK for fires to be inside the shelters on wet evenings, you can sit under cover.

Windy

It isn't safe to be under trees in high winds and we may need to cancel events when the wind is strong. If we need to cancel an event you will be offered an alternative date.

Snow

For light snow it is likely that events will go ahead - please dress appropriately for being outdoors in the snow. If we need to cancel due to heavy snow you will be offered an alternative date.

What if I need to cancel because someone in my group has to self isolate?

If you can't attend your booked event because of Covid-19 - please let us know and we will offer you an alternative date.

What is it like in the woods?

No footpaths

We are trying to keep the wood as natural as possible to retain its charm. The ground is relatively flat but it is uneven and there are some trunks from felled trees to watch out for

Toilets

We do have a toilet and hand washing facilities, we don't have a baby changing unit but we are happy for babies to be in the wood and for alfresco nappy changing.

Shelters without electricity

All of our accommodation is canvas - we do not have a building and there are no phone charging facilities. We do not have mains electricity or gas - so some things take a little longer

First aid

Fat Squirrel Outdoor staff are first aiders and we have first aid facilities

Can I get a refund?

If we need to stop an event happening due to high winds, heavy snow or a change in Covid restrictions we will first alternative dates. If you can't make any of the alternative dates offered we will grant a refund minus an administration fee of  20%.

If you need to cancel up to 48 hours before your campfire event, we will refund the fee you paid minus a £5 administration charge. We cannot accept cancellations within 48 hours of your booking.
